e-Accessibility Policy Toolkit for Persons with Disabilities: How AT Supports Independent Living

This article discusses the aspects of Telecare, a monitoring system for those with disabilities, that enables disabled persons to communicate with and receive services from healthcare providers, to maintain privacy while having support for social and health needs delivered through technology, and ensuring that people with a disability are able to live independently within their own communities. It discusses certain devices and services that provide leisurely activities as well as useful tools, and that promote a more independent lifestyle. Telecare is made up of a number of features -- some are passive systems that monitor the health and well being of individuals without their active involvement, while others are more highly interactive and require the introduction of assistive technologies to allow individuals to be an active partner in their own care packages.
