Camp Alec

Camp Alec is a literacy program in Grand Rapids, Michigan that brings children with disabilities together for one week to enjoy recreational literacy activities in an outdoor setting. This camp is geared toward children who primarily use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Campers spend approximately three hours a day doing literacy activities with trained couselors, using trialed interventions and assessments to help them improve their use of tools and devices for literacy. While campers partake in other recreational activities, the couselors are further trained at the Level 2 Literacy Academy with Drs. Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver. At the conclusion of camp, parents and families receive reports on perceived strengths and weaknesses of each camper, as well as assessments and suggestions for future interventions. Adult educators who act as counselors receive training on teaching students with complex disabilities.
