Using Flexible Participation in Technology-Supported Universally Designed Preschool Activities

In this article, Howard Parette and Craig Blum introduce the idea of flexible participation in technology-supported activities for preschoolers with disabilities. The flexible participation framework pairs UDL principles with Baumgart's concept of partial participation strategy to maximize activity participation through the following stages: Flexible curriculum and technology use -- curricula allows for multiple means of representation, action, and engagegemnt to maximize participation; flexible use of peer or adult assistance to maximize activity participation via scaffolding and collaborative work; flexible skill sequences to maximize participation; and flexible rules to include broader/more universal rules to promote participation.
