Launched in 2008 by Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger, WatchKnowLearn is a Memphis-based free online video directory that offers educators the opportunity to store, categorize, and rate K – 12 educational videos. Teachers, instructors and educators can also suggest videos for inclusion into the directory, review, approve, and assign videos into appropriate categories. The videos cover major educational topics, from elementary to secondary schools (or age range 1 – 18), and are Kid Safe because they are vetted by teachers. A team of WatchKnowLearn with professional educational experience oversees the recommendations and selection of materials added to the site. All videos are categorized by content (Language & Arts, Math, Social Studies, etc.), captioned and run mostly under 8 minutes. Users can access the videos either by category or narrowing down the search by age. Each video has a summary, rate (1 to 5 stars), age appropriate, type of license, and indication of the educator who found it. The site is managed by the non-profit Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi located in Hernando, MS, and is directed by Kerry Matthews. Videos are also selected from the following websites: Curiki, InternetArchive, SchoolTube, SlideShare, NationalGeographic and TeacherTube.
