Some students experience difficulties with language arts, and may find it difficult to participate in class assignments and activities. Here, we explored some of the reasons students develop a reluctance to express themselves in writing, including complications with Dysgraphia. A variety of high-tech and low-tech strategies for reversing writing reluctance were presented. Our guest speaker, Regina Richards, addressed handwriting, spelling, and how to generate ideas and translate them into a written format. These proven strategies are accessible, and can be immediately implemented in the classroom.
Regina G. Richards, MA, is a Board Certified Educational Therapist and is President of Richards Educational Therapy Center (RET Center). She is the former director of Big Springs School, a multidisciplinary program for language learning disabilities, especially dyslexia and dysgraphia. Ms. Richards graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master’s in Education, specializing in the teaching, training, and curriculum development of bilingual education. She teaches regularly at the University of California Extension Program in Riverside, and provides teacher training to a variety of other organizations. She has authored a collection of journal articles and books throughout her career, and is the parent of an adult son who has struggled with dyslexia and dysgraphia all his life, who is currently very successful in a computer business.
